So far I woke up and hoped on my computer, well more like stood and stared. I skipped the normal browsing through digg.com and checking out the news on news.google.com and went straight to checking my email and seeing what needs to be accomplished.

Whew, standing gets tiring I hope I can make it a week!

Four hours into it I realized that this is going to be impossible for me to get any sort of long-term work done. It makes me wonder about my chosen profession and lifestyle, how healthy can sitting or standing for this many hours be for a person.

Experiment failure. I had to move my desk back to its original position. Maybe I didn’t give it enough time? I did notice a few things in the short time I tried to use a standing desk. I was more alert standing up, I was more on task, and I did use the computer a lot less. I however was very uncomfortable standing even for an hour straight, after the third or so hour. I also noticed that my legs were getting a nice stretch but also locking up to try and support my weight. I wonder If I could do 1 day on, 1 day off and build up my endurance. I’m going to try using a stretching ball next to see if it can help with posture and maybe make it easier for breaks meanwhile.

Day 1

At first its very strange to be standing all the time. It was a bit disorienting just looking at the monitors and trying to do the same things. My legs are getting tired but it’s actually a really good indicator I need to go do something else and take a break from the computer.

So far so good, I didn’t spend nearly as much time on the computer today, but I question making using it “Inconvenient” as a solution for overuse. I also wonder how well I’ll do when I need to work for long periods on it.

Yes, I’m standing while writing this.

A friend of mine built a Treadmill Desk, you can see his blog post http://kelvinism.com/blog/australia/build-treadmill-desk-985/. We got to talking and he suggested that I build a standing desk first, as I don’t have a treadmill nor the cash to buy one. I took a look around my house and tried to figure out how to raise up my desk. I had considered using bricks to lift up the table but I thought it might be unstable and damage the table. There are a lot of people who build it themselves or purchase tables that are already perfect height. I got lucky and thought about taking my side tables from my bedroom and placing them on top of my desk.

It turns out it works very well. The things I was hoping to accomplish by doing this are the following. Better posture, I always slouch and it will cause me to have really big problems down the road with my back. Ironically, I want to spend less time on the computer if it’s not as easy to just sit there for hours and hours then I’ll be less likely to waste time. Breaks, I don’t take near enough breaks when I’m sitting and working on a project. I hope this forces me to take a break, walk around, get some water, and take care of myself better.
